The FDA’s approval of finasteride (the active ingredient in Propecia) has raised concerns about possible side effects associated with the drug. The new approval could affect hair growth in men who have difficulty stopping their treatment, according to an analysis by hair-loss clinics.
The new approval for finasteride, which is also sold as Rogaine and is sold under the brand name Propecia, also comes in the same drugstore as the branded version of Propecia that was initially approved by the FDA to treat enlarged prostates. It is the first time that the generic version of Propecia, known as finasteride, has been approved to treat hair loss in men.
A separate study published in the Journal of Urology found that men who took finasteride for six months had a higher incidence of receding hairlines or hair loss than those who took a placebo. The same study was conducted in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
“The new approval of finasteride could have serious health consequences for men who are taking a new form of finasteride. The FDA’s approval of finasteride could be devastating to many men,” said Dr. Susan Taylor, the director of the Urology and Gynecology Clinic in Houston, who spoke on condition of not being connected to a medical condition. “If finasteride is approved, the use of finasteride could lead to decreased quality of life for patients, particularly those with enlarged prostates.”
Finasteride, known generically as Propecia, is an oral prescription drug that’s been approved by the FDA for treating male pattern baldness. It’s effective in reducing hair loss and promoting hair growth. However, it can also cause side effects such as low libido, erectile dysfunction, and breast tenderness. More serious side effects include sexual dysfunction, mood disorders, and suicidal thoughts.
In the new study, Dr. Taylor compared the efficacy of finasteride to that of the generic version of Propecia.
“While the FDA has approved finasteride for the treatment of male pattern baldness, it has not approved the use of finasteride in the treatment of enlarged prostates. This study suggests that finasteride is potentially a more effective treatment for treating male pattern baldness than the generic version of finasteride,” Dr. Taylor said in a news release. “The new study also suggests that the use of finasteride may also be associated with a lower risk of sexual side effects.”
In addition to the study, Dr. Taylor’s team also evaluated the impact of the FDA’s approval on the results of a study involving men who have been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia. In that study, they compared the outcomes of those who had been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia to those who had not. The researchers then compared the outcomes of those who had been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia to those who had not.
“In the study, we found that finasteride was superior to finasteride alone for treating enlarged prostates, as it was more effective in reducing hair loss and promoting hair growth in these patients,” Dr. “It also found that finasteride was also more effective for treating enlarged prostates than finasteride alone.”
In another study, Dr. Taylor also evaluated the impact of the FDA’s approval of finasteride on the safety of men who have had an enlarged prostate.
“The safety of men who have undergone prostate cancer treatment has not been established in this study, which has the potential to increase the risk of serious side effects that may result from this drug,” Dr. Taylor said in the news release. “We also evaluated whether finasteride could also increase the risk of sexual side effects in this patient group.”
The FDA approval of finasteride, also known as Propecia 1mg, was granted by the FDA in March 2015. It’s the second time the drug has been granted approval for treating enlarged prostate to treat male pattern baldness. In the same year, the drug’s developer, Vivus, also filed a patent for its hair growth treatment.
The generic version of Propecia (finasteride) is also available for those who prefer not to take the medication. However, its availability in the U. S. is not without controversy and some legal considerations.
Propecia is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat male pattern baldness. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with hair loss.
Propecia works by reducing DHT levels by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. This conversion leads to increased levels of DHT and, in some cases, a temporary increase in hair growth.
